Thanks for your offer but as it happened the fellow who did the scanning hit the wrong key and saved it as an ASCII file instead of binary, hence the problem which has now been corrected.
I am amazed at the file size of a scan. Even in the smaller binary size Rhino 4 has to crunch its way through it to do simple tasks.

I just received a stl file from a scan. I imported it into Rhino4 and
the "fun began". It appears to be a mesh and slows down Rhino to a
crawl. I can't select the mesh object to modify it. I need to modify
and scale the object but havn't a clue as to how. Any insight or
suggestions?
