Kavo 4444 remote control

Hi all
would anyone please tell me how connect a Kavo4444 drive for remote start
stop. I followed the manual page 18 and am using a spdt 24 volt relay with
common on pin 2, normally open contact to pin 1 and normally closed to pin 14
of 25 pin D shell connector on the back.
I want it to start the spindle when I power the relay and stop when I
interrupt the relay coil power. The spindle starts when I power the relay but
won't stop, even if I disconnect all the relay wiring from the rear panel 25
pin connector.
The diagram in the manual has confusing symbols, they look like diodes on the
switch contacts. Has anyone got any ideas?
