cabinet ground wiring.

I have read that things (drives, motors, etc) should be grounded using
heavy wire back to one point (is this star wiring?). I am about to
install all the electronics for my cnc mill in a new metal enclosure.
The enclosure has a separate mounting plate, 2mm steel, and I was
wondering if it is OK to just wire the grounds directly to this (at any
point on the plate), rather than wiring it all back to one common point?
Thanks,
Frank
