Thanks Danny. I may start with something like a X-3 but I would much rather have a larger mill. And I already have 2.A Gorton and a smaller Index. And just thought as I have always been interested and now 72 and retired it might pass some time and be fun to learn something new. But thanks. Whitey

I beg to differ...To a newbie with no electrical or mechanical background a cnc conversion is going to be VERY COMPLICATED.
When things are going good everythings great. When things start to bad, such as noise related issues and wiring problems then it gets real frustrating and time consuming and sometimes exspensive.

My interpretation was your initial post seemed to say you had a mill you
wanted to convert and thus wanted to know about conversion.
Actually most mill conversions are fairly straightforward. If you're
buying a mill you may have the option to get the CNC parts with it.
They're not all that complicated.
The software for CAD and CAM for the jobs IS sorta complicated. There
is a learning curve.
If you need help selecting a mill, state what you need to do and give
hints as to your budget. For many people a Taig works wonders and the
whole CNC setup can be had for well under $2000. If that fits what you
want to do great, it's a great mill at a great price. There are bigger
mills with a bigger work box area, bigger cutting head motor, and
stiffer and can breeze through steel. These may be $3000, $5000,
$10,000, whatever. More, anyways. There's some mills which can be
cheaper than the Taig but IMHO the reduced capabilities and quality
won't justify saving a few hundred $.
