I make Gantry systems and make stepper and servo systems
You can make your own system you will need ball screws or rack an pinion for shriving the machine and you need a stepper motor
controler that will allow you to interface it to the computer. There are several options out there.

DeskNC
and other make the software to talk to the board and you can get an inexpensive board from hobby-cnc.
There are also different boards with different price ranges depending upon what functions you are looking for and the resolution you
need.
