Hi Roland - it's not necessary to have a fixed "home" position unless
you are using servos with a calibration sequence.

You normally work in "work positions" not "machine positions"

Z0 in work units is normally the outer end of the stock and X0 the
centre of the stock (center of rotation).

Tool change postion is normally set just far enough away from the work
so the longest tool clears without hitting it. It's pointless and time
consuming moving to some fixed point to change tools unless your machine
has an automatic loader. If you fit your machine with a tool turret all
you need do is the same process. Just make sure it's far enough to clear
the work, no more.

You can set one if you like, but there will be times when you find it
more of a hindrance than a help :)
