The real question is, Do you want a milling machine, or do you want a
project?
If you want the learning experience and project of rebuilding an old
machine, have at it. But you WILL NOT save money unless the old
equipment is ready to go as is, free shipping, etc. You can find a
good Bridgeport or Bridgeport knock off for well under 3000, many times
with digital readout, or tooling or some other accessories that make it
a good deal.
It takes a lot of experience to spot the really worthwhile salvage.
I still make the same mistakes even though I know better. (i.e spending
350 bucks on refurb an old Rockwell belt sander) It sometimes helps to
have an objective 3rd party to kill your enthusiasm and make you look at
the machine without the rose colored glasses.
