According to the 24th edition Machnery's Handbook, pg 1166
" Axis designations for a lathe are shown in Fig. 21. Movment of the cross-slide away from the workpiece, or the centerline of the
spindle, is noted at plus X. Movement toward the workpiece is a minus X. ......... Z .... movement away from the headstock is
positive and movement toward the headstock is negative. Generally there is no Y movement. "
