milling materials

on 2000-10-03 09:25:14 UTC
Hello,
I have also ran into similar problems milling small objects...
especially fine details using 0.3 -0.5 mm bits.

I have tried milling Plexiglass using a Dremel multi with small bits
and had no sucess. the plexiglass tends to melt together (even when
submerged in water while milling).

The material i use at the moment is hard jewlers wax and it works
fairly well. Its a lovely material to work with, but would be too
soft for what you want. I then use this first wax piece to cast (in
pewter) as many peices as I want.

I am still in the search for an easily millable material for very
fine detail (preferrably something that will go over 150 Degrees
celcious)

Perhaps its a silly idea but its possible to do some very neat
millingin wood with dence grain!!! The wood they use in saunas works
wery well ( I havent tried teak )...and then perhaps spray the coin
with tough auto laquer to toughen up the fragile details.

One way or another ill think about the problem over the next few
days. Don't hesitate to contact me directly... milling fine detail is
something im still playing with at the moment.

Regards and
Happy Milling,
Bernard Bryce (Ireland).
