The yard came from the distance from the kings nose to the tip of his
fingers from which came the foot, inches and you know the rest. It was done
to measure cloth for the tailors with no thought for other applications.
Yes the French king did the same as they were always being cheated by the
English and they ended up with metric. The English lumber trade has
reverted back from metric to imperial as they say metric was just not
workable for them. Here in Canada we struggle with both, the government
decreed we were metric and everything changed but our biggest customer is
the good old USA hence our manufacturing proceeds with imperial.
Measurement is an exact science but boring !
