Slightly off-topic : History behind lettered drills

Obviously fractional drill sizes go back to some part
of a British king's anatomy, and we have the French
to thank for metrics, numbered drills, I believe are
related to standard wire guages ... but what about
lettered A-Z drills. Where did they come from? Just
curious.
