to see how I did it. My cost was less than $200 INCLUDING a used 486 and
monitor! Unfortunately, I understand the encoders I used are no longer
available, but the principle will be the same no matter where you get the
encoders. Price may vary, but if you search the surplus market, who knows
what you will find. Also remember for the shorter axis, there is always the
strip and encoder salvaged out of an old HP printer. This is I think a 360
line per inch quadrature encoder and will give about .7 ten thousandts
resolution. With the modifications that I have made as noted on the updated
link on this page, I have been extremely happy. Now if I can just get the
lathe done!
