Before getting a 3/8 thread on tool holder from Sherline, I used a .250
dowel pin in the holder. Connected a test lead from this pin to the body
of my electronic edge finder. Another test lead connected the .200 dia
tip of the edge finder to whatever I was trying to locate to.
When the dowel pin touched the part, the circuit was completed.
I've since used this trick with my Bridgeport when I had to pick up a
reference from the edge of a slot too narrow to get an edgefinder into.

I use both electronic and traditional edgefinders. For most work, the
lighted types are quick and easy. But, there is just a touch of runout
on mine. If it's gotta be as close as I can get, I use my "old
fashioned" Starrett edge finder.
