I disagree. I think the reason that they used the serial port was because of
the problems with windows and the parallel port. The serial port eliminated
that problem and since the whole idea of flashcut is to have a windows based
program they had no choice. They benefited tho from have a proprietary chip
to prevent use by others without the box.
