I have sometimes had to change the mouse type with setup
or mouseconfig a few times to get it right ,there are several
bog standards for serial mice so I use the most common
(MS 2 button serial protocol) first unless I know different

first select the mouse type and port in 'mouseconfig' (from the console)
you should now be able to use the mouse at the console with gpm

then run xf86config (again from the console)
select the same mouse type but accept the default of '/dev/mouse' as
the port

and then 'startx' to test it
thats what has always worked for me anyway
