Hi all,
I just dusted off my old notes on the square corner milling
the customer wanted us to copy a die cast part with a 3x2x0.281"
square cornered pocket on one side
I was about to turn down the job when one of the "Old Timers"
in the shop said Ok to it
he had me swing the mill head 45deg to the side and 45deg back
while he ground a center drill to a very sharp 60deg point
we were able to walk the cutter down the corner (raise the knee)
to square up the radius in the corner of the pocket and then
move the table out and back (X and Y)to clean up the bottom
then tilt the head around to get to the next corner and so on
I never saw the math worked out on paper but the sides of the
'cone' of the cutter ended up parallel to the sides and bottom of
the pocket with the tip reaching all the way in to the sq corners
the part came out great and we handed it over to the guy with
instructions to NEVER bring us anything like this again ,it was
an army shop so we could get away with that (usually)
just something to throw into the old bag of tricks
