ball screws are like lead screws, with the exception that instead of using a
square "acme" thread on the shafts they are rounded to fit small metal balls
which reciculate inside a nut...if you are familiar with the recirculating
steering gear for the steering in older cars you'll know what I mean, if not
there are several web sites with pictures to get a better idea. the stepper
motors are simply a type of electric motor used to drive the lead/ball
screws to make the table, quill, or gantry move. Here are some excellent web
sites with great links for more explanation.
