Ken,
A 34 single/double/ triple?? BIG difference in trying to give you an
answer. But...
You could use a worm gear arrangement instead of the brake. Just put
the gear on the spindle and the "worm" on the stepper shaft. If this
assy. pivots you can easily return to "regular" lathe operation.
Also, for a given stepper resolution, your "machine" resolution is
much increased.
