Sounds like a car battery.

I've done this from time to time.(I keep the battery a LONG way from
the arc!) I don't know the long-term effect on the battery, but it
is easy, quick and it works.

P.S. First tried welding with car batteries after reading about the
first group to cross the "Darien Gap" in central America. Acouple of
jeeps, some aluminum ladders(to use as bridges for the jeeps). One of
the jeeps' axle broke. They made a 24V "Welder" and fixed it.
Fascination in a young boys eyes!!!
