Hi,
To manage the floppy with linux (unix) you can use the mtools, which
allows you to use a FAT formatted floppy as you do in DOS.
As for a programming editor I would definitelly recomend Emacs, in any of
its flavors (Xemacs, etc). If you want something to replace MS Word then
the choice is more fuzzy...probably Wordperfect? I favour LyX/LateX anyway.
About the Linux release to use, I would not care that much about Red Hat.
I am sure that any of them can be set to run EMC, is just a matter of
compiling the proper kernel. So, for beginners, a compact release like
Mandrake Linux can be a good starting. Debian Linux offers very good
updating capabilities and can even install rpm packages.
hope this helps!
