Thanks Jon, that did the trick. Now I will try to cut some more difficult
parts. I still need to make the adapter for the plasma torch.

No, the diode is only to protect the transistor from the inductive voltage
spike caused by turning off an electro-mechanical relay. No need for it
on a solid state relay.
