A very successful weekend of scrounging also yeilded a 9 x 18 x-y
table from an old EDM. What I didn't think of before I picked it up was
that an EDM has no mechanical load on the work. Therefore when I
disassembled this table it is "Cherry". Screws, bearings, gibs, ways,
nuts and all show no visible sign of wear. It even has a one shot lube
system built in.
There was an inch of EDM powder sludge but that cleaned off with
only surface rust underneath.
My point? Well, now this white elephant needs a home so why not
make a mill or router out of it? I just need some ideas on a Z axis.
Column and head from an old drill press? I was thinking about an
old arbor press column. I also scarfed some 1" Thompson rail and linear
bearing. Does this have enough rump to hold a milling head?
What about just a scaled up version of a Sherline head?
Can someone point to some home made mills? Need to see some
pictures.
