I agree, this isn't the cheapest way to get the functionality it offers.
But if you're building something and have a choice of a canned unit
you can bolt on and have it work, or paying an engineer for a week
to make one up, which is cheaper?
$2K for the engineers direct costs plus overhead, plus opportunity
cost of engineer not being on another project, plus....
