Hi Chris,

Balsa wood doesn't have a problem with being abrasive but, if you go to
using some harder woods you will find that ordinary steel tools blunt very
quickly. This is because several types of wood have the nasty habit of
sucking up silica and storing it in their cells. Since silica is a powerful
abrasive it soon takes the edge off tools. Worst for this are some of the
tropical hardwoods.
