Gecko 320

I'm planning on replacing the steppers on my 3in1 with a servo system.
To that end, I've located some 90v 5.5a DC motors out of "fitness
equipment" that are just about exactly the right size and shape and are
CERTAINLY the right price. ( Six bucks Canadian ! )
The problem is that they lack an encoder. Now, I have a few of the
"Electronics Goldmine" motors around that I could easily attach to the
back end.
However, they are the 1000 slot/4000 count models.
Does anyone know if the Gecko 320 will work with such a fine encoder,
or will I have to try to locate a coarser encoder ?
Thanks in advance.
