I have no experience with the Smithy, but I have converted my Shoptask over
to CNC and it is easy to do and you do get control of the Z axis. Check them
out at www.shoptask.com
Just as an aside, there has been a pretty serious suit running between
Shoptask (the inventor of the 3 in 1 machine) and Smithy. Seems that
Shoptask was just given a summary judgment. No idea what the long term
effect will be on either company.
