I am also starting to look at using servos instead of steppers. I just
ordered a pic-servo controller and plan to do some experiements with it.
It is relatively cheap- $175, and seems very flexible.
In an earler post Dan had indicated some problems runing a pic-servo in
step& direction mode, but I talked to Jeff Kerr who developed it and
understand the problem. I expect to use thme in serial mode anyway, not
in step mode. I want to use them on my VB windows system to get away
from timing problems in Win95
