Auto start of X in linux

It is possible to make x start after every boot. My red hat 5.2 book, on
page 94, gives the details. Basically you modify inittab to goto run
level 5 on start. That will start the x server, and an xdm session.

You will still have to log in to x and start up emc, but at least the
first screen you get to will be a nice graphic login box.

I would point out however, that if xdm inst right, and you
automatically go to runlevel 5 you can get the system into some hard to
recover from states- i.e. if you re-boot it goes right to xdm, but you
cant login to fix an xdm problem, so you are hung. Test xdm carefully
before you make it the default startup.

Trivia question- why was the name X chosen for this gaphic system?

The answer is the same as why a programming language is called C.
