Lathe Rack & pinion.

Hi-ho all...

Anyone had any experience doing a retrofit to a lathe and used the Rack & pinion drive on the lathe apron instead of the lead screw?

I've just looked at a lathe a friend is considering retrofitting after seeing my wee lathe, and getting a pulley onto the leadscrew is going to be a major bit or work, whereas the rack would be easy.

Appart from the obvious lack of precision, and backlash, has anyone had success driving the rack?
