worm drive -> rack and pinion

I have been following the recent discussion on making worm wheels(?) to mesh
with a standard threaded rod or bolt. I was wondering if anyone has tried
making smaller diameter wheels that could be used as a pinion running on a
threaded rod "rack". I am thinking of something in 1" pd wheel that would
mesh with a 5/8" piece of ready rod... I realize the tooth profile will
probably be getting pretty funky and there may be some problems getting the
tap to properly thread around the perimeter of such a small wheel. Before I
go burn up a tap, I thought I would ask the group to see if there is any
experience in this area. I would like to use this idea for the drive system
on a low end CNC router table.
