The pen, IIRC, is a passive device. There are wire loops inside the tablet,
and the pen has a coil. When you press in on the nib you force a ferrite core
into the coil. It senses tilt with some other coils in the pen ,

Anyway, the majority of the works are in the tablet.

Sounds like much pain for little return. building your own LVDT based system
would be far easier.
