Maybe the arm is too complicated an idea. Perhaps instead we could use
something more like a laser range finder attached to a 3 axis rig. The range
finder works like a probe only much faster and more accurate. The machine
tracks the x and y axis via encoders and the laser provides the z axis
position. The z axis can also move to keep the surface within the laser's
range.
I have used a system very similar to this [ http://www.scantech.net/ ]and it
works very well. One of the more difficult issues is the enormous amount of
data a system like this produces.
It does seem to be a more straight forward approach than a six axis arm, and
might not be any more expensive.
