Strange,
I've had good luck with local people. The folks at Coast Tool have gone WAY
out of their way to help me, and I've probably spent $300 with them.

I ordered some wax from them and their supplier only sent half the order. The
salesguy called, was totally apologetic. When I explained that a partial would
get me started, I'd just ordered more so I'd have enough in stock, but I needed some
to get started with the machine, he offered to send a truck up with the wax.

I've always found it better to be honest with anybody. It sure doesn't hurt to
request a catalog at the time you place an order, though. "Please send me your
XYZ drill bit assortment and a catalog" sounds a lot more like a serious customer
than "please send a catalog".
Businesspeople don't care what you do with their products. They care if you're going
to give them money and how much of their time getting that money will take.
So be businesslike.

There are worse things on earth than sending your suppliers Christmas cards.

Don't waste their time. If you buy a 50 cent lathe bit don't expect them to teach you
to use a lathe.

Sometimes it's worth it to go out of your way to establish a relationship -

A real estate agent I know moved to town to start working for my mom. As soon as
he was settled he went down and borrowed $100 from the local bank and stuck the money
back into his account. He made the payments promptly, and sent in the last two payments
the next to last month.

A year later he bought a home. Guess where he went to ask for a mortgage.
