There is another option for powered Z motion. Milltronics came up with a
Z slide that bolted between the head and the knuckle. This offered 6 or
7" of travel. I've seen one of the mills in action, it's pretty
impressive to see the whole head jumping up and down when hole drilling.
This however, would probably not be the best option for a stepper
conversion, even though the mass is considerably less than a
knee/saddle/table.
