IMService Develops Vcarvz to Produce CNC Lettering
with that "Hand Carved" Look.

IMService has completed development of a low cost 3D carving program
based on the technologies of the popular Vfontz engraving program.
Vcarvz creates 3D toolpaths to carve letters and enclosed areas for
CNC routers, mills, and engraving machines. Vcarvz is a 32 bit
Windows programs for use with Vector-Cam or other Cad/Cam programs.

The program allows one to position letters, monograms, words, or
phrases precisely with respect to various outlines and to develop a
toolpath for either incised or raised letters, backgrounds, borders,
and especially decorative carvings. In all cases, whether raised or
incised, the final shape of the letters at the cutting surface
matches the original CAD drawing or font contour.

Vcarvz analyzes the closed shapes and the Tru-type font objects, and
determines the proper movements for a V shaped or angle sided
cutter. These movements vary in the Z or vertical direction to
produce differing widths in the font and contour outlines. The tool
path for a square or sharp corner is an angled movement, ending at
the top of the material being cut. Cutting the resulting tool path
will produce a letter that appears to be carved from the material. By
enclosing a letter object within the boundaries of an island, the
background of the letters is cut rather than the letters themselves,
resulting in a raised letter appearance.

Two cutting strategies allow one to cut to maximum depth required for
a given cutter angle & letter width, or a maximum depth can be
specified. If the maximum depth is less than the cutter would
require, a flat center region is defined that can be pocketed or
hatched in the Cad-Cam program. In any event the original
font/geometry outline is perfectly incised in the material. The
maximum depth setting allows one to carve large letters in thin
materials. For instance a 10 inch high letter can be carved in 1/4
plexiglass with a 60 degree cutter, yet be held to a maximum cut
depth of 1/8.

The tool paths can be placed into Vector Cam using a proprietary text
format, or saved as a DXF tool path file for use with Vector or other
programs. The retail price for Vcarvz is $800, but Vector Cam users
can purchase it for $500. Demos and more information are on the
