SQUARE WAVE TIG

I don't do much emailing on the weekends so I hope this thread
hasn't died out.
Mariano, admittedly I have never been to Australia, but I am sure
that they sell one of these TIG machines there. Miller and Hobart,
"Econotig"... Lincoln, "Square Wave 175"
I have a Lincoln Square Wave 175 and it is the best all purpose
welder ever made that is AFFORDABLE for the home. It uses an auto
balanced square wave and has automatic high frequency start/shutoff. It
welds aluminum beautifully and also is a whopper of a stick welder (AC,
+DC, -DC). 175 amps is more than enough for any home job. The TIG
torch is pretty generic air cooled variety, but if you need a water
cooled torch that's really more in the pro range anyway. It comes with
everything except a bottle of Argon (100-150 bucks extra)
I will tell you what it won't do. You don't have control over the
waveform. Industrial TIG's you can adjust all aspects of the square
wave. BUT, only VERY experienced aluminum welders can take advantage of
this anyway.
It also does not have Pulse. This is the only real drawback. Pulse
is neccessary for very light work (i.e. heat exchangers, etc) I have
welded .035 and that is about the lower limit of the machine.
If you really want to do aluminum, it's the only economical way to
go. Unless you want to use Oxy/Fuel. And if you're that good then you
have my eternal respect. If you never do aluminum then don't buy an AC
TIG. Get MIG or DC TIG and save some money.
Good luck.
P.S. Aluminum welding takes alot of practice. If you've never done
it. It took me about 3 months to get acceptable results.
