The whole concept started with a problem that some all-software
motion control systems for stepper motors had problems generating
evenly spaced pulses at the high speed end of the curve. The
unevenly spaced pulses cause the steppers to lose steps far
before the true stall speed.

One fix is to have a hardware rate generator that produces step
pulse rates with very fine granularity, so that there will be no
jitter in the pulse train.

If you have steppers with high steps/revolution, or are trying
to get very high step rates out of the machine, you may or
may not run into this problem.
