Wally,

You're overlooking the fact you have no way to disengage the
leadscrew from the nut when you reach the end of the thread.
You would have to stop and reverese the spindle to move the
carriage back out for another cut.

A pair of "half ball-nuts" would certainly be "interesting"
devices.
