I built several machines using those enco mill/drill tables. The first
one used 2" pipe for the Z axis. It was basically three floor flanges , a
couple Tee and some various length nipples. It was assembled much like the
capital letter F but rotated 90 degrees to the right. The expose floor
flange was used as a base to mount a flat plate that held the Z axis
leadscrew, stepper and 1/4HP die grinder.
The other machine used a piece of 4X6 rectangular steel tubing. I welded
a base plate to it to secure it vertically to the stand. I used a harbor
freight 5" mill/drill vice for the Z axis . I replaced all the leadscrews,
added torrington needle thrust bearings and generally improved the imported
drive mechanism.
BTW I go to Tacoma screw all the time for fasteners.
