The high end contingent are likely to say that backlash comp is unnecessary
as it is poor kludge and good performance will only be reached with a proper
zero backlash machine setup. While there is validity to this approach, the
reality is many home shop users will not be using pre-loaded ball screws and
all the other mechanical tricks that are required to achieve it. So, my
opinion is that you need to provide back lash compensation so the home shop
user can have some flexibility in getting the best performance possible from
his hardware.

Regarding the pulse direction, it would certainly give the user added
flexibility in his choice of electronics and configuration.
