I have subscribed to HSM for about 5 years now and off and on have had
subscriptions to Projects in Metal (they just changed the name to that
one, I think Machinist's Workshop)
On the whole I have found it very informative and useful. They have
published several detailed articles on some neat stuff like the EDM
and a quick change gearbox for a atlas 6" lathe. They also have
published some things I found silly like a lawn edger. But not too
much of that.
I have never seen a magazine without ads, but the consolation is that
the ads are for our hobby stuff. I have found much more usefulness
than annoyance in those ads.
Also I think the editor (Mr. Rice) is going to start including lots
more stuff on CNC since our hobby is growing fast. There is soon to
be a series on Wire EDM. I think several people are anticipating that
one.
There are several british magazines that are really good too. Stricly
I.C., Live Steam, and Model Engineer all have lots of stuff on
machining.
I get HSM, Machinist Workshop, and Nuts & Volts. Those three cover
most aspects of the home CNC Hobby.
P.S., I also get several trade magazines for free like Modern Machine
Shop etc. But these are just for fun, out of the home shop league.
