John,

The "proper" AMP tool is about 160 dollars. 50 dollar handle, 110
dollar die. It works REALLY WELL!, but you can see why Dan doesn't
include it?! And you need a SECOND die for the "other size"
connectors in the range!!!

These IDC (insulation displacement connection) type connectors have
been used by hobbiest types for years... IF you CAREFULLY USE a
PROPERLY SIZED screwdriver, and understand the process, you can get
VERY reliable connections.
AMP does sell a less expensive "screwdriver" tool for these, but it's
not any better than a REAL screwdriver.

Yes, screw terminals will be easier for most people, but then the
prices will have to go up, (in some cases quite a lot!) due to
increased parts cost; BUT ALSO due to the increased "board space"
needed for the screwtype connectors...

Hope this helps.

P.S. Personally, I HATE screw connections, UNLESS they are de-
pluggable. more expensive. But then, I have the AMP tools :-)

P.P.S. It COULD be possible to move the "proper tool" around to
people using Dans' products. A similar thing was done with a reamer
on the 7x10 lathe list. But, last I checked, they were looking for
who "broke the chain"...
