Have you looked at the Kurt Shreckling design ? The only critical tolerance is
for the bearings either end of the shaft. All other components are, err,
somewhat lax in their tolerances - And a little crude in manufacture. There are
no expensive castings or esoteric materials involved. The down side is limited
thrust. Take a look at http:www.gtba.cnuce.cnr.it for info on some of the other
designs available.
