In order to keep some control on abuses of the patent system (there are
many that are much worse than sitting on a "pending"....), the USPTO
made the life of a patent 20 years from the date of application, as
opposed
to 17 years from grant. Beware of possible changes that require
publication of a patent application shortly after submission - which is
what most other countries do.
