Yep! Looks like if you want to using gearing only to set up your lathe for
rifling, you'll have to make other (easy but not cheap) modifications.
Replace the motor with a variable speed DC system (and possibly different
drive pulleys) that will let you run the spindle at VERY slow RPM. Do I
recommend it?...NO. Will it work?...sure. Is it worth it? probably not.
There are a couple of alternatives here which we haven't...and won't (here)
that easily overcome those gearing problems.
