It would point down, and give an analog voltage (read it with an A/D)
according to the distance (Z). Of course table movement gives X and Y
to get your 3 axes sensing.

Now one problem I see is that if the object is not perpendicular to the
beam, the signal will fall off in relation to the slope. However, since
you end up with a grid, you can then make a mathematical model, which
contains the slopes, which in turn allows you to recalibrate the measurement.

I'll report back later if I achieve any success with it....
