Well, Jon, I started researching after having a client ask for a rush on
some fixturing parts I designed. The machine shop was lagging, but the
client still wanted them anodized, and wasn't going to complain about the
price. This has happened several times for me, and often when out of time
on prototype-type parts, we just skip the anodizing, which results in a
not-so-slick delivered part. This time around my client paid alot of money
for the rushed anodizing, and I thought I'd RATHER pocket the charges AND be
able to deliver the parts faster.
These will be the time/charges for 3 DINKY little parts by thhe time I get
them back:
Tuesday: - spent 20 min packaging parts for Fedex
- 25 min. for roundtrip to local dropoff point
- $17 for Priority Overnight
Wed - ano. shop receives parts
- $50/lot charge
- $50 rush charge for same-day anodizing
- $17 self-addressed postage-paid return Fedex
Thursday - receive parts, inspect, and probably not be happy with location
of blemish caused by hanger wire
Total: $134 + 45 min of my time at engineering consultant's rate
I would much rather have billed the 45 min doing the job myself AND charging
the $100 AND having the job done the same day.
