Even simpler than air is the really old fashioned follower tensioned by
a cable that runs over a pulley with a decent weight on it. This does
require a tube with a full length slot.
One might look at something like UniStrut. Perhaps some floating
bushings made of Delrin to keep the material centered (and flopping out
of the slot).
