My dad used to work there! I got a tour once, considering what little I
knew about motors, controls, and such (nothing), it appeared to be
magic. Those linear motors are capable of really moving along very
quickly. Vastly quicker than any hobbyist is going to get out of a
ballscrew setup.
Some were sold as plotters, Levi's bought some with lasers for cutting
denim. They also had, in at least prototype form, one setup to do wiring
harnesses. If I had the room, I'd sure be interested.
