Just talked to my dad on this, and my memory is off.
Originally Levi's used these as plotters to draw the cloth patterns
which operators laid over the cloth to manually cut. After he left,
they'd developed one with the cloth cutter carried by the machine.
The big advantage to the clothing industry was the ability of the
control to near instantly scale patterns. These were controlled by
HP3000 computers. Dad says a machine of this size cost at least
$100,000, and they ran to $200,000+.
